Jim Clarke wrote this on 2-4-2013 after hearing the song for the first time:
" good job with the song...I'm kind of uncomfortable writing love song type of stuff...I could never do it very well back in the day, too uptight or something I guess. a lot of the song came from dreams, i have a recorder in my cell phone so when I wake up during the night i mumble whatever's in my head into the recorder and listen the next day to see if any of its usable.
offhand I know the last four lines of the 1st verse and the first four lines of the last verse come from that land between asleep and awake right from the recorder to paper, the title comes from there as well.
I had this dream that was so vivid....I was with my girlfriend dancing some sort of waltz kind of thing in what I think was nyc in the 40s,we were in what I think was a cobblestone city square surrounded by tenement apartments with old fashioned gas lamps shining down on us and stars moving around in the sky.
the funny part was that the dream started out with my girlfriend being so angry with me that she was pushing over large trees with her bare hands!
I don't know how we got from there to slow dancing in the 1940s....guess I said whatever I needed to say to calm her ass down.
anyway that's where the moonlight and stars bit comes from."
